History of Wine Coolers

Wine Coolers have been around in many forms for hundreds of years. In fact the first “drinks chillers” were in actuality ice rooms used by the Italians to keep wine cold.

Iceboxes or ice rooms were often found next to rivers or were packed with frozen water to keep milk and food cold. The Italians first used this technique to chill wine and in effect the first wine coolers were invented.

Even tribal like societies thousands of years ago used to collect and store ice in either caves or pits in order to primitively store food, drink or furs, though obviously they would not have used them as Wine Coolers. Historic records show that these ancient societies though not understanding the physics, still understood from observation that when degradable foods were kept cold they lasted longer.

The next development came from chemicals which allowed Commercial Refrigeration, combining liquids and chemicals to create an endothermic reaction (removing heat = making cold). Ibn Sina an 11th century physicist and chemist was the first to create the refrigerated coil, with he used to create essential oils. This was also an early manifestation of a distillation process. A technique which is used to create wine and the refrigerator would eventually lead to wine coolers.

The first home use fridge was available in 1834; this is really the beginning of modern Refrigeration using vapors rather than liquids to cool. And without the advances made by American scientists we would not have access to modern Wine Coolers. Modern Wine Coolers are more advanced than these early models but still operate under similar principles.

In much the same way that we have moved from pits or caves stuffed with ice, to portable units that are powered and use chemicals; we have moved a step further, creating small and compact Wine Coolers that are capable of reducing the temperature of liquid by degrees Celsius in minutes. As technology facilitates the miniaturisation of parts and components the devices get smaller, such have our Wine Coolers. And as the technology has advance with leaps of ingenuity we are now able to cool or chill wine in minutes.
